21 year old Boston Celtics guard Sebastian Telfair was arrested after the police stopped him for speeding and ended up finding a loaded handgun under the seat of his SUV.

Telfair is from Brooklyn and he was stopped at around 4 a.m. at the Bronx River Parkway in Yonkers, New York, after he was speeding at 77 mph in a 45 mph zone. This was disclosed by the Westchester County police spokesman Kieran O’Leary.

Neither Telfair nor Al Eden Fuentes, the passenger, had a valid driver’s license. This resulted in the Range Rover being set for impoundment and was search by a police officer. It was during the search that the officer noticed the butt of the handgun sticking out from under the passenger seat.

Telfair and Fuentes claimed that they knew nothing about the gun. The police, however, are investigating whether the gun was registered and if so, to whom.

Telfair and Fuentes, a resident of Queens, were produced before the Yonkers City Court on charges that included felony second degree possession of a weapon and both pleaded not guilty. The bail was set at $7,500 and both are due to return to the court on May 17, 2007.

Celtics’ owner Wyc Grousbeck said that the players had been warned last year to obey the team and league gun prohibition along with the state laws and the team was taking the charges against Telfair very seriously but would only act after the facts were ascertained.

In the 2004 draft, Telfair was the 13th pick and was traded last year to the Celtics from Portland.

In February 2006 while Telfair was with Portland, he was questioned by the police at the Logan International Airport in Boston after a handgun that was registered on his girlfriend’s name was found in his pillowcase on the team’s plane. For this offence, the Trail Blazers fined Telfair and suspended his for two days.
